Please note: The recording of this podcast was not successful due to a perfect storm of technical issues, but the prepared content is presented below. We hope to re-record the discussion at a future date.

Producer Charlotte Pierce and correspondent Tara Morgan recently talked with a couple of college coaches, Drew Tennant of Cornell and Glenn Putyrae of Alabama, about the thrilling racing by *future masters rowers* – we mean, the top youth rowers in the nation – who went head-to-head at the 25th annual #USRYouthNats June 6-9 at Nathan Benderson Park in Florida, and at the recent NCAA and IRA competitions. Recorded discussion to be posted later.

FUN FACT: Of the 151 clubs that competed at this year’s Collegiate Nationals event, Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club has qualified its men’s and women’s youth eight all 25 years the event has run.

  • Drew Tennant: CJRC is a great club that has been successful for a long time. Todd Jesdale brought them to success in the 90’s and they have kept the best elements of his program throughout the years. They keep things simple and low key. Their boathouse is nothing pretty and the program is a no-frills operation but they turn out good competitors year after year.
  • Drew: Youth NATS: so many exciting points: continued dominance by Saugatuck in the womens 8+; a break out performance by Row America Rye to win the boys 8 and make the A final in the 4. A great season for Capital in the boys 8; Saratoga Boys winning the 4+ and 2x, CBC girls win the 2- and the 4+; Cassanda Reed repeats in the womens 1x; Nicholos Aronow’s come from behind victory in the boys 1x to win by 0.1 seconds; great finished by some small clubs in the small boats: Triangle in the womens 2-; miami boys 2x; Asheville girls 4+.
  • Tara: Seattle represented strong with podium finishes by the usual suspects Holy Names Academy, Seattle Rowing Center, Sammamish Rowing, Green Lake and Mount Baker.

  • Drew: NCAA: Washington women sweep. Pac 12 has three teams in top 6, Texas climbs another step closer to title with 2nd place finish in Dave O’niels 5th year. Texas women do the texas two-step on the medal podium (instagram @utexasrowing). 6 Big Ten schools at NCAA, including the on-the-rise Rutgers
  • Tara: I got to watch Texas dominate the SIRAs a few weeks ago at Oak Ridge.  They are very consistent in their stroke sequence and if you watched the friday racing 1V8 Texas v WA, you saw that in spades as they moved through Washington in the last 750.  Washington dominated in the end, but that was one of the toughest closest races in the history of the NCAAs.
  • Drew: IRA: a real battle of heavyweight powerhouses: yale on top in the v8, Yale-Washington-Harvard claiming 8 of 9 medals in the 8’s. Cornell lightweight men get redemption after failing to make the A-final at Eastern Sprints; Navy shows its depth in the lightweight 4’s; stanford LTW women’s dynasty made it 5 in a row!
